Tips on overcoming fear of FLYING.

For those of you who know me, I HATE, yes HATE flying. Since I’m living in London, flying is unavoidable, unless there’s a train that goes from London to Malaysia (maybe I should build one!). Everytime when I’m about to step into the aeroplane, I wouldn’t be able to eat before that, and I become very restless and scared. During the flight, I can’t read, sleep, or eat. Yes, I’m totally wasting money and time!!! 12 hours of flight can be very torturing to me.

So I did some research on internet and gathered some useful tips from friends, I came out with some of these tips that worked for me. I was very much relaxed when I flew back from KL to London this time round, and I could sleep for a while, not much (I’m a light sleeper), I could even eat!!!! How cool is that!!!

Tip 1: You are in a bus!

Tell yourself that you are in a bus! Yes! It does look like a bus. When there’s turbulence, just remind yourself that bus do go through some bumpy road. That worked for me during turbulence. So I would imagine myself in a bus, or a tube, rides can be bumpy. It’s a silly idea, but it worked!

Tip 2: Get up and walk!

After the plane has taken off, when the seat belt sign is off, get up and walk to the toilet. Just to let yourself know you are in ‘control’. Sitting down can be scary, and it does looks like you aren’t in control. So walk, and when you reach your seat, do not sit down immediately, if you can, ask for an aisle seat, and stand beside it for 5-10 mins. Result? It calms me down, and I was able to eat! Yes! Eat!

Tip 3: Bring ipod, walkman, cd player!

Music often calms people down, so if you have ipod, or iphone or any gadgets that has music in it, bring it to the plane. Make sure you stored lots of music to keep you occupied. Another thing that helped me was-sermons! Yes, sermons! I downloaded some Rev. Edmund Chan’s conference talks, and I listened to it in the plane. I quite enjoyed it myself.

There are many more tips that you could find in the net, but these 3 tips have helped me a lot. I was so relaxed that I didn’t realize time has passed quite fast, without me knowing, we were soon landing. I didn’t feel it was a long flight.

I do remember one person’s advice: Enjoy your flight! There’s nothing else you could do in mid-air. So there I was in the plane, relaxed, with Shern beside me, listening to sermons, enjoying God’s presence, and constantly remind myself, it’s just a BUS RIDE!

Back to Malaysia Trip (June 18th-July 2nd, 2011)

Shern: Dear, have you taken my toiletries?
Me: Yes…it’s in the bag already.
Shern: Where’s my specs?
Me: you blind??!!
Shern: I cant see rite??!!
(etc etc etc…)

That was June 16th, the day before we were to fly off back to Malaysia. Packing is kinda drama for both of us! Quickly packed everything, set the alarm and went to bed. Woke up the next morning, load our luggage to the taxi and off we went to Heathrow Terminal 4. Take off at about 12:20pm and reached KL about 7am. My parents were in Thailand helping kids with their English, so it was my mother in law who came to the airport to pick us up. We just couldn’t wait to…EAT!

Kuala Lumpur

We reached Sat early morning, set off to buy Kon Loh Mee, Chow Kuey Teow Fried Lo Bak Ko for breakfast! Because of previous experience (check out:KL trip Part 2 – FOOD!!!), I told myself I cannot fall sick this time, so we bought 1.5 litre bottle of 100 plus! For the next few days, whenever we eat out, I ordered 100 plus. It worked!

Took a bath after the breakfast, we took a nap. Then it was dinner time. It was eating and eating and eating! We just really miss Malaysian Food! The weather in KL was a little hot, so I tried my best not to go out the first few days. On Wednesday, I managed to get over my jetlag (Shern was suffering, and took longer!), went to airport and fetch my parents back from Thailand (what an irony!)

Came Saturday, the day we were to celebrate our parents birthday. That was one of the reason we came back, to celebrate my mum’s advance 60th birthday, and of course my dad’s 63th birthday. It was a really stressful day!!! Full of drama! But in the end, our mission was accomplished, we had to create all sorts of stories! It was just hilarious! Thank you everyone who were there to create this conspiracy :)

Kota Kinabalu

On Monday (June 27th), we and my parents set off to KK for a short holiday. Reached KK, and it was HOT! Blazing HOT! It was as if, if you stand under the sun for 5 mins, you will see smoke coming off your skin (of course that did not happen). Met up with Pastor Noah, Florence, Gianna and Andrea. Went for lunch and checked into the apartment. The apartment was amazing! With 3 rooms, living room, dining area, and kitchen, it only cost us RM280 per nite for 4 of us! We went to eat seafood for dinner, it was just delicious! Amazing! Gianna has grown up alot! She really can talk, and she was independent enough to stay a nite with us without her parents around her! I was really shocked! Speechless! On Tuesday, we went to Karambunai to stay for a nite. The beach was just so clean and clear.

Brunei

We managed to get a ticket at the last minute to go to Brunei to visit Wei Chyn and her family. We have not seen them (actually we have not met her husband and the little cute Noah) in like 5 years. We were so happy to finally see them. It was a very short trip with a tiny little drama in it. But we were happy that we managed to make a trip to Brunei.

Kuala Lumpur

Finally on Thursday, we went back to KL. With just 2 more days left, our main priority was to spend time with family and more eating! It was just so sad to see our 2 weeks end just like that. But it was very relaxing and eventful 2 weeks for both of us. We really enjoyed ourselves spending time with our love ones and gaining weight! On Sat morning, said goodbye to our family and say Hello to London.

To those I did not manage to meet up, sorry :s Time was just too short. There will be next time!

I will be back!!!
